That's not what I remember. It was more of a surprise that they actually went through with it, but there was talk of a heel turn going back since at least December. I was actively hoping for it as I did (and still do) like heel Austin better. It was bad for business with baskin robbins australia Rock going out to film his movie at the same time, but personally I thought that the summer of 2001 was the best work Austin did (certainly in the ring) since the injury.
Speaking of Austin, during his walkout in 2002, WWE ran a number of segments on Confidential and the like explaining how Triple H was the main allied brands catalyst for them winning the Monday Night War. That was some revisionism there.
A couple of others:
